Thanks for visiting the FUTA CANADA 2017 REUNION SITE. We are glad you are here.
Canada 2017 reunion was an amazing and relaxing reunion.
It was hosted in Calgary, fondly known as "Cowtown" and the home of the biggest outdoor show on earth - "The Calgary Stampede".
THANKS FOR BEING THERE!
The Organizing team would like to thank you for coming to the reunion in Calgary Canada. We appreciate you choosing to take time out of your very tight schedules, money and energy you put into the success of the reunion, without your presence, it would have been empty halls.
We also seize this opportunity to thank all those that registered, but were not able to come due to other very pressing engagements. We miss you and hope to see you at the next reunions. We also appreciate all those that contributed by making donations or placing adverts and goodwill messages in our event brochure.
We thank God for safe trips back to your various destinations. We appreciate that everything went smoothly throughout the event.
Below is a quick summary of some of the events at the reunion;
Reconnection Night: This was the first night of the reunion, turn out was very impressive, there was so much fun, very good interactions among alumni regardless of age or status.
The business meeting: The attendance was great considering the fact that it was held in the morning after long travels the previous day and the event of the previous night. So much was achieved at this meeting which was anchored by Dele Odeshi but very interactive. The meeting led to the adoption of the FUTA Alumni in Diaspora constitution, issues of membership registration and how we can give back to our alma mater through programs and projects. There was a presentation of business methodology and prospect by an alumnus.
The Gala Night: The set up and attendance was awesome! The highlight of the evening was the ability to raise money for scholarship for the current FUTA students, in response to call from the FUTA Vice Chancellor’s speech, delivered by his representative, Prof. Femi Akindele. We were able to raised over $5000 (Canadian) within a space of 30 minutes! So far, we have received over $2000 of the money. Thanks to everyone that donated. That little effort will go a long way in changing someone’s life forever. For those that will still like to make pledges, kindly get in touch with Adeolu Ariyo (+1281 455 4752), Wale Adekugbe (+1403 305 2251) or any member of the Canada 2017 LOC. Once again, thank you for your donation, we promise it will be spent judiciously and for the purpose.
So, what next? There was a debate regarding the next hosting city or country. Houston, Texas, and London, UK were the two leading contending cities. There is a bidding process going on, this is the time to push for your country / city to host the next reunion 2019. Contact the FUTA in Diaspora leadership team with your plans in terms of membership, logistics, location, affordability, flight connection, visa issues and the people who are ready to do the leg work locally. Now is the time to start planning.
We also discussed the importance of electing executive officers, as all current roles had been by volunteers etc. In order to do this, a working constitution was adopted at the reunion, there is a committee looking into the registration of the Diaspora group and opening a bank account. We are committed to move this forward and ultimately be a shining example for the upcoming alumni. Also, we encouraged the University Management to consider Ex-Futarians for positions that are available within the University. The alumni body would like to see more capable Ex-Futarians occupying key positions within the University.
We also want to increase our membership base particularly with the younger Futarians, one way to do this would be through the social media, email database etc. Remember that, great schools becomes great not only because of teaching but because of the quality of the product from the schools. And if the quality products do not come together as one body, they will never have a voice or impact in the society. Let’s make our alma mater the best. We are stronger as a group. We are the university, we make the university.
